Project overview

The challenge

The site encountered several challenges. Proximity of M4 and M5, 24hrs Emergency Services Heliport and historic Ecological Corridors

The HDS solution

HDS Lighting prepared a Lighting Impact Assessment for the proposed Almondsbury development, located beside the M4/M5 interchange and close to an operational helicopter airfield. Our solution applied ILP GN08 guidance to protect bat-sensitive habitats, watercourses, hedgerows and important dark corridors, while providing safe and compliant lighting for the development. Aviation safeguarding measures were also incorporated to control glare, upward light and spill towards the airfield.

The outcome

The assessment established a clear lighting strategy that allows the development to progress while protecting dark corridors, nocturnal wildlife and nearby residents. It also demonstrated that, with appropriate glare control, shielding, warm-colour lighting and restricted column heights, the proposals could be delivered without significant effects on the neighbouring helicopter airfield or aviation operations
