Lighting impact assessment beside the M4/M5 interchange, with ecological corridors and a neighbouring heliport.
The challenge
The proposed development sits beside the M4/M5 interchange, close to a 24-hour emergency-services heliport and established ecological corridors. The lighting assessment needed to consider these competing sensitivities together.
Our approach
HDS prepared a Lighting Impact Assessment covering nearby habitats, watercourses, hedgerows and dark corridors, alongside potential glare and light spill towards the heliport. The proposed strategy used controlled light distribution, shielding, warm-colour sources and limits on mounting height to address the identified receptors.
The outcome
The assessment set out a lighting strategy and mitigation measures for the planning team, providing a basis for progressing the design while addressing ecological, residential and aviation-related constraints.
