HDSLighting was appointed to undertake the electrical and lighting design for the proposed Sizewell C Park & Ride facility, supporting one of the UK's largest infrastructure projects.

Project overview

The challenge

The project presented several technical challenges due to the scale of the development and the diverse range of electrical loads requiring integration within a single distribution network. Multiple stakeholders, including the client, utility provider and multidisciplinary design teams, required close coordination to ensure compatibility between incoming power supplies, distribution equipment and site infrastructure. The design also needed to accommodate phased construction, maintain compliance with current legislation and standards, minimise energy consumption and provide a robust solution capable of operating within a demanding construction environment.

The HDS solution

A coordinated low voltage distribution network was developed from the incoming utility supply, providing resilient electrical supplies to the various site facilities through strategically located distribution equipment. The external lighting design utilised energy-efficient LED luminaires to achieve the required illumination levels while reducing operational energy consumption and maintenance requirements. Electrical supplies for welfare facilities, operational buildings and EV charging infrastructure were carefully balanced across the network, with cable routes, protective devices and equipment selected to optimise performance, maintainability and future adaptability.

The outcome

The completed design delivered a safe, efficient and coordinated electrical infrastructure capable of supporting the operational requirements of the Sizewell C Park & Ride facility. The proposed solution provided reliable electrical distribution, compliant external lighting and sufficient capacity for the planned EV charging infrastructure while supporting the client's sustainability objectives through the use of energy-efficient technologies. The coordinated design reduced construction risk, facilitated installation and provided a robust asset capable of meeting the demands of this nationally significant infrastructure project.
