Special Projects

Sizewell C

Sizewell C is a major new nuclear power station being developed on the East Suffolk coast. The project involved the design and provision of up to 950 electric vehicle charging points across several associated sites.

Project overview

The challenge

The scale of the required electrical load necessitated the installation of sufficient supporting infrastructure to ensure the charging network could operate reliably and maintain a stable power supply.

The HDS solution

The initial charging point locations were agreed and marked on a base design drawing. This established the required substation capacity and loading levels, allowing a three-phase cable network to distribute power to sub-feeder pillars across the site. Individual single-phase supplies were then provided to each charging point, with every charger connected to a central communications network for remote monitoring, management and control.

The outcome

The sites were designed for phased commissioning, allowing sections of the charging network to be brought online as demand increased. This gave the client a flexible and scalable solution, enabling charging capacity to be expanded on an as-needed basis.
