Project overview

The challenge

The fixed positions of existing highway infrastructure and the requirement to achieve BS 5489 Category C2 lighting performance required a carefully engineered lighting solution. The design had to provide compliant illumination within the widened junction whilst maintaining continuity with the existing lighting on all approach and departure roads, avoiding abrupt changes in lighting levels and ensuring a safe, consistent environment for road users.

The HDS solution

HDS Lighting developed a coordinated lighting and electrical design that achieved full compliance with BS 5489 whilst integrating seamlessly with the existing highway lighting installation. Through detailed photometric modelling, careful column positioning and the optimisation of luminaire performance, the required lighting levels and uniformity were achieved across the widened junction and its approach roads. The underground electrical network was redesigned to accommodate BS EN 12767 passive safe lighting columns, incorporating automatic electrical disconnection devices to isolate the supply following a vehicle impact. This delivered a safe, compliant and maintainable lighting installation whilst minimising disruption to the existing highway infrastructure.

The outcome

Through close collaboration with the Client, Local Highway Authority, Statutory Undertakers and other project stakeholders, HDS Lighting developed a coordinated and fully compliant design that satisfied the project requirements. The lighting and electrical designs were successfully integrated with the wider highway improvement works, enabling the scheme to progress through approvals and achieve detailed design completion, ready for construction.
