Section 278 highway lighting design

Specialist lighting design for changes to existing public highways. From a new access to a complex junction improvement, we assess how the works affect lighting, existing assets and electrical infrastructure.

The scope

Support that fits your scheme.

  • Review of existing lighting and the effects of revised highway geometry.
  • Design for junctions, crossings, accesses, widening and relocated lighting columns.
  • Coordination of retained, removed and proposed assets with construction and authority interfaces.

What to send us

These details help us define the work and prepare a useful proposal. If some information is not available yet, tell us what stage you have reached.

  • Existing and proposed highway drawings
  • Asset records or a survey of existing lighting
  • Highway authority requirements and works programme

Before you brief the design team

Your questions, answered.

Do existing lighting columns need to be surveyed?

Reliable information on existing assets and electrical arrangements is important when roads, junctions or crossings change. We review the available records and identify whether a site survey or further information is needed before design assumptions are fixed.

Can you coordinate with the highway designer?

Yes. Lighting positions, levels, cable routes and equipment interfaces need to be considered alongside road geometry, drainage, signs, utilities and construction phasing. The agreed scope identifies the drawings and technical interfaces HDS will support.

Does the lighting design guarantee technical approval?

No designer can guarantee a third party’s approval. HDS prepares the agreed technical information and can support responses to authority comments; approval responsibilities and submission requirements are confirmed for the project.
